With Vanilla Reload cards becoming harder to find in-store and even more difficult to find a store that accepts credit cards for their purchase, I decided to check into a few of the stores listed on the Vanilla Reload site as reload locations. To my surprise, my local 7-Eleven had a new addition to the prepaid card selection.
At first glance, I noticed that the cards were given face-lifts!
On the left, notice the new cards added “PayPal | Prepaid MasterCard” as a reload option.
There were also a few improvements on the back as well. First, the barcode was replaced with a magnetic strip, which I presume is for added security.
Secondly, the scratcher itself has an additional layer on top of it to prevent from counterfeiting.
While I normally try to start small when testing new locations to manufacture spend, I decided to go for a full $1000 (2 VRs @ $500 ea). The clerk did not seem to mind ringing it up, but after swiping my card on the keypad, I was notified that I was declined for one of the two “prepaid cards”. The system then prompted me that I was approved to purchase the second one if I agreed to it, which I did. When the clerk handed me the receipt, you can see that I was originally rung up for both but one was automatically voided.
Now the real question was which spending category does this fall under? I went back and bought a second one that night with my Chase Ink Bold hoping it would fall in the 2x gas category.
After waiting a few days for my statement to close, it looked like Chase categorized 7-Eleven under “Auto Related” category, which subsequently fell under the gas category earning double points (see Shell gas purchase below).

I stopped by another 7-Eleven in the area and found a plentiful stock of VRs as well. It appears that this is becoming a regular item in Southern California stores. Also with the spending category 7-Eleven falls under, this means more than the usual 1x at CVS stores. To find a 7-Eleven near you, check out the store locator here, www.7-eleven.com/home/locator/.
Keep a lookout guys!
